I think all too often people misinterpret marriage for a fairytale. I have never known a single married couple who would tell you that they rode off into the sunset on the eve of their wedding and lived a fairytale life from that point forward. The wedding itself is the fairytale. Marriage is work. I know. I know…not what people want to hear but y’all know that I speak the truth!
Ten years ago today I cried all the way down the aisle. Of course now I joke and say that’s because I knew what a mess I was getting myself into. ;-) But the simple fact is…I am a blubbering basket case who sobbed at the finale of Beverly Hills 90210 and at every single episode of Grey’s Anatomy. So, you can imagine my emotional state of mind on my own wedding day. Not to mention, I was incredibly proud to be saying “I do” on the exact date of my Grandparents 50th wedding anniversary with my Nanny standing by my side as my Matron of Honor. Today my precious Nanny and Papa celebrate 60 years! In fact, we all four celebrated together this evening over supper and strawberry shortcake.
As a wedding photographer, I love getting to experience the euphoria of wedding day love over and over and over again! It helps me remember my own “fairytale” because after ten years the fairytale takes on new meaning. Now those euphoric moments happen when Jeff, me and the kids are all piled up in our bed on a Saturday morning “scuddling” (aka snuggling + cuddling). The crinkled noses, carefree smiles and laughter of the boys being tickled by their Daddy reminds me of why working hard on a solid marriage is so incredibly important! It is not only about “us” anymore. One thing is for certain…marriage is no cake walk. Jeff and I have our issues just like most everyone else in this world. But at the end of the day we are “The McCarthy’s” and I take great pride in the marriage and life that we have built together. Marriage requires hard work and immense dedication but the rewards are positively priceless! Today we celebrate ten years as husband and wife. And for the record…I have earned a few “extra crowns” in heaven! Just sayin’ ;-)
*Special thanks to Andrea Gonzales for the beautiful b&w image in the top right hand corner shot at the Doug Gordon workshop last week.
Awe, this was just what I needed to hear. Thank you!! Congratulations!!
You two are so cute together!! That is a HUGE accomplishment! And it’s nice to know that I am not the only one who cries w/ every single episode of GA!! Even when I watch the re-runs, lol! Cheers to 10 more & more! :)
Congrats on 10 years! I love your collage of photos from over the years!
Congratulations to you and Jeff on ten years! But girl, we do need to talk, because the marriage can be the fairytale! I am living proof with my husband and am proud to say that at 29 years it is a fairytale! It was then and it is now! (haha, you knew I’d chime in here didn’t you?)
