“I make quick, fast decisions. Some are good and some are not so good. But I have learned to turn the not so good ones into something profitable. I accomplish this by going in with no expectations.” That was the gist of the message that Gary Fong was articulating during a PUG conference where he was the guest speaker earlier this month. I was so excited to met Gary because I admire his climb to the top and the way that he got there…through sheer determination and fortitude. It was enlightening to hear the story first hand from Gary himself. He has this “Zen like” approach to life and business that is admirable. And although he has reached the pinnacle in relation to the world of wedding photography, he is an incredibly humble person. He came from meager beginnings, to say the least. But he mapped out his own personal climb to the top by way of his “no expectations” philosophy. The one thing that he is adamant about is “giving back.” This is an attribute instilled in him by his own personal mentor, Mr. Rocky Gunn. I must say that I am certain that Rocky is proud of Gary and the incredible way that he has chosen to give back to his own industry. I know that I certainly appreciate it. I, being a youngin’ in the eyes of many seasoned photogs, found it refreshing to be encouraged by a top notch professional who welcomes and embraces the modern age of wedding photography. His unfiltered offering of industry knowledge and know-how was a priceless gift. His speech was truthful, informative, inspiring and motivational! Thank you Gary!!!
I bought my first lightsphere a couple of years back. I love it. But what I don’t love is the fact that as I am walking around shooting, it tends to fall off and then the silly questions begin…”What is that thing?” “Did you lose your bowl?” “Is that tupperware?” I was actually discussing this with a fellow photog and Gary overheard me…whoops!…it was okay though, he was totally cool with it! In fact, he pointed out my comment and frustration later in the presentation which lead to a solution for my problem. The all new collapsible lightsphere. Not only does it stay on your flash but it actually fits in your camera bag! Yippee! That is huge because y’all know how difficult it is to get that original one in your camera bag.
On my drive home, I replayed several of Gary’s points over and over in my head. It is interesting to me because the manner in which I have approached my own business has mainly been based on the same “no expectations” philosophy that Gary encourages…although I must point out (and many of you already know) that I am a S-L-O-W and meticulous decision maker. ;-) When I first started, I imagined being where I am today but I certainly didn’t expect it!!! I continue to imagine where I “might be” in the years to come but in no way do I expect it. If it happens…awesome! And if it doesn’t, no worries. No expectations = no disappointments. Just a continuing journey in the ever fascinating game of life.
Here are a few captures of me and some friends from the conference. I am always happy to share space with people who have a passion for photography like I do! Jacksonville is full of mad talent and I am certainly proud to be a contributing artist.
Ur so freakin’ cute! I love that no expectations=no disappointments…it’s just hard not to build “secret” little expectations up in ur mind tho…lol!
Look at YOU!!! Go Dawn. :) I cant wait to check out the new collapsible Fong!! Mine is so big and bulky – but I so love it.
Thanks for the links.
