I had the distinct honor of photographing one of America’s hero’s last Friday. Congratulations to Princess M. Russell for twenty-two years of service to our nation. I am proud to have had the opportunity to meet you and thank you for the sacrifices that you have made on behalf of all Americans.
I would like to share a poignant message that I heard for the very first time at Princess’s ceremony. This is an amazing message that beautifully expresses the responsibility that she had for twenty-two years.
“The Watch”
For more than twenty-two years this Sailor has stood the watch.
While some of us were in our bunks at night
This Sailor stood the watch.
While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch.
Yes, even before some of us were born into this world
This shipmate stood the watch.
In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen
Brewing on the horizon of history
This shipmate stood the watch.
Many times she would cast an eye ashore and see her
Family standing there needing her guidance and help
Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
She still stood the watch.
She stood the watch for twenty-two years
She stood the watch so that we, our families and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety,
Each and every night knowing that a Sailor stood the watch.
Today we are here to say
“Shipmate…the watch stands relieved.
Relieved by those you have trained, guided and led.
Shipmate you stand relieved…we have the watch…”
“Boatswain…standby to pipe the side…shipmate going ashore…”
What an amazing way to commemorate such an incredible service that Princess Russell has provided our nation. My personal thanks to you Princess, for not only allowing me to capture the memories of this retirement ceremony for you but more importantly my sincere thanks for defending America.
