I get quite a few e-mails inquiring about “the models” that I shoot…mostly from other photogs who are interested in the possibility of starting a shoot club similar to the one that I participate in. I am fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible community of ridiculously talented make up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe designers and of course lots of photogs. Most of these “models” that you see here on my Blog and on FB are a photographed at Faythe Mesic’s monthly shoot group. Faythe is an extremely talented makeup artist who has created a dynamic team of equally fab counterparts and they all work very hard to create these elaborate themes for me and others to shoot.
The great thing about organizing a group like this in your area is that you get to photograph concepts that you would not normally have the opportunity to shoot. Granted these models are not your paying clients but I have to say that some of my favorite images that I have shot were a result of this group. The best part of all is that you have complete creative freedom. No stress to deliver. If you screw up…so what! And if you land a magazine worthy shot…well then…brilliant! There is no pressure to produce. You just get to shoot whatever and however you please. It’s fabulous!
So, what do you need to do to start a shoot club in your community? First, you need to gather a talented team of vendors. Once you are in agreement on a team of MUA’s, stylists and designers you can then reach out to extended vendors such as local florists, bridal shoppes, venues, etc. And of course you need models. But don’t feel like you are limited to experienced models only because often times the less experienced ones are every bit as amazing! As for payment…the models receive a few digital files from each participating photographer with a print release. A fair trade for your growth and experience. Start a FB group to find others who are interested in participating and schedule your first shoot out!
Have fun with it. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the network and friendships that you will build within your own backyard. Keep me posted. I’d love to hear how it goes. Happy shooting!

If anyone is intersted I am the owner of ” The League” a national agency for makeup artists and hairstylist who would LOVE to help lead a shoot group in your city and being 183 strong I’m sure one of them is close to you!! They are the ELITE in their field and city and I am honored to carry them in my agency.
